Lyon

As France's second-largest economic hub, Lyon has established itself as the country's third-largest data center market, situated at the crossroads of north-south traffic flows between Paris, the Mediterranean, and Italy. Its geographic location makes it a natural hub for companies seeking to serve the Mediterranean region, Switzerland, and Central Europe from an infrastructure outside the Île-de-France region, with competitive latencies to major markets. Lyon’s data center ecosystem includes some fifteen colocation facilities spread across the metropolitan area, with operators such as SFR Business, nLighten, DataOne, and SHD. Network connectivity relies on France-IX AURA (formerly LyonIX), an internet exchange deployed across eight geographically distributed points of presence in the metropolitan area, with 75 active peers and an installed capacity of 1.3 Tbps. This neutral interconnection node enables direct peering with telecom operators, hosting providers, and content providers in the region. France applies the European GDPR framework and the Military Programming Law for operators of vital importance. Data centers of a certain capacity are subject to the tertiary sector decree on energy efficiency and must comply with reporting obligations to ARCEP.

Climate

Lyon has a semi-continental climate with cold winters (January average: 4°C, lows near 0°C) and warm to very warm summers (July average: 22–23°C, with highs that can exceed 35°C during heat waves). These conditions allow for effective natural free cooling for seven to eight months of the year, with outdoor temperatures below 15°C from October to April, which significantly reduces the load on the chillers and promotes a competitive PUE. In summer, increasingly frequent heat waves require cooling systems sized to handle peak heat loads. Relative humidity is high in winter (80–85%) and moderate in summer (65%), with no extreme conditions impacting the equipment.

Transport

Lyon Saint-Exupéry International Airport (LYS) is located about 25 km east of downtown, accessible in 30 minutes via the A43 and A432 highways. It is France’s fourth-busiest airport in terms of traffic volume, with direct flights to major European capitals and intercontinental destinations. Lyon-Bron Business Airport is located 8 km from the city center. Lyon has two major TGV stations (Part-Dieu and Perrache) offering connections to Paris in 2 hours, Marseille in 1 hour and 40 minutes, and Geneva in approximately 2 hours. The highway network converges on Lyon from all directions: A6 (Paris), A7 (Marseille-Mediterranean), A42 (Geneva), A43 (Grenoble-Chambéry), and A89 (Bordeaux-Clermont-Ferrand).
