Marseille
Marseille stands as France's second largest digital hub and one of Europe's most strategically positioned data exchange crossroads. Its geographic location makes it the natural gateway for data flows between Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, with over 16 intercontinental submarine cables landing on its shores, including AAE-1, SEA-ME-WE 4 and 5, PEACE, 2Africa, Blue and the recently operational Medusa system connecting the Maghreb and Eastern Mediterranean. The Marseille colocation market is anchored by a reference carrier-neutral campus operated by Digital Realty (formerly Interxion), spanning interconnected sites including MRS1, MRS2, MRS3 and MRS5, the latter delivering 22 MW of IT capacity. Other operators include Phocea DC and several specialized facilities. The city hosts five Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), including France-IX, making it a prime destination for hosting providers, CDNs, cloud operators and content platforms. Rack, cage and private suite options are available from single-rack deployments to hyperscale builds. Applicable regulations include GDPR and French law, with NIS2 classification for critical infrastructure operators. Colocation datacenters are subject to energy reporting obligations introduced by the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), in force since 2024.

Climate
Marseille's Mediterranean climate features hot, dry summers (July-August averages: 27-29 °C) and mild winters (January-February averages: 8-10 °C). Outdoor temperatures exceed 30 °C for several weeks per year, restricting air-side free cooling during summer months. Relative humidity is moderate, with no extreme conditions likely to damage equipment. The dominant north-westerly Mistral wind can contribute periodically to thermal dissipation.
Transport
Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) is located approximately 25 km to the north-west, connected to Gare Saint-Charles by direct shuttle in 25-30 minutes. Toulon-Hyères Airport (TLN) provides a secondary option around 70 km to the east. Marseille-Saint-Charles station is a major TGV hub with direct services to Paris (3 hrs), Lyon (1 hr 40 min), Nice and Barcelona. The motorway network includes the A7 (north-south axis toward Paris via Lyon), the A50 (toward Toulon and the French Riviera) and the A55 (coastal route toward Martigues). The L2 ring road, opened in 2018, connects these motorway axes across the city.
