Cixp
Established in 1996 at the CERN site in Geneva, the CERN Internet eXchange Point (CIXP) is one of the world’s first carrier-neutral internet exchange points and the main one in French-speaking Switzerland. The service is provided jointly by CERN and the Equinix data centres in Geneva and Zurich. CERN and two Equinix sites in Geneva are connected by a redundant optical ring. A founding member of Euro-IX, the CIXP has around 40 members, according to the Internet Society.
It brings together telecoms operators and internet service providers from Switzerland and France, as well as national and international research network operators. Membership is open to any organisation with an interest in exchanging IP traffic. The CIXP offers public peering with route servers and hosts CDN caches. It is interconnected with GÉANT, the European research network, as well as with the Lyonix internet exchange. The Equinix data centres provide hosting services, enabling a combination of interconnection and colocation for research infrastructures and operators in the region.
