Freifunk Hamburg

Freifunk Hamburg is a non-commercial citizen-led initiative that has been developing a decentralized mesh Wi-Fi network throughout Hamburg since the early 2010s. Based on the principle of the Picopeering Agreement, this network relies on routers (nodes) installed by individuals and volunteer organizations, equipped with specialized firmware that allows them to communicate directly with one another and form an autonomous mesh network without a central hierarchy. By 2013, the Hamburg community had established a network of more than 300 nodes interconnected via VPN tunnels. Each node operator can make a portion of their Internet connection available to power the mesh network, or simply extend it via relay, without affecting their home or work network. Businesses, organizations, and local governments can also host a node to help provide Wi-Fi coverage in their neighborhood. This open and neutral architecture is part of an effort to combat the digital divide and preserve net neutrality at the local level.
